PHC’s achievements, though certainly impressive, are increasingly par for the course among classical schools. In secondary education, schools such as The Logos School and The Ambrose School, both in Idaho, have ranked as high as fifth in the nation in mock trial competition. The Logos School in particular has qualified for the national competition an astonishing 14 times. However, the recovery of rhetorical skill among classically educated students is about far more than the mere accumulation of competitive laurels. Dr. Steve Turley explains how the revival of classical education involves nothing less than the renaissance of Christian civilization. FREE resources! Like this video? See more at: http://hedua.com/media/ Classical education is based on the trivium, or the three foundational levels of education: - grammar level - logic level - rhetoric level The Pros and Cons of a Classical Education The Cons - a rigorous program requiring a great deal of time and energy - teaches material many parents have never learned themselves - introduces advanced concepts at an early age The Pros - There are many resources and groups available for support. - This method incorporates rich and wonderful literature. - A chronological approach to history aids in the learning process. - Logic is emphasized, enabling children to analyze information instead of simply learning facts. - The language training provides strong development in speaking, writing, research. - The Latin and Greek emphasis creates an increased depth in Bible study and understanding. Who is a good fit for classical education? - Only the most structured personalities can truly accomplish all that classical education requires. More often, parents will blend educational types, incorporating parts of classical education with other more relaxed models. Classical education establishes sharp children with a great ability to communicate well. But they must learn to temper that with a gracious attitude. Dr. Stoyanov argues that the current way classical music is being taught is outdated and provides both demos and solutions. Violinist Yuliyan Stoyanov holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the College-Conservatory of Music, University of Cincinnati. His professional career includes solo, chamber music and orchestral appearances in Japan, Italy, Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Netherlands, Bulgaria, and Macedonia, as well as throughout the United States. Recordings of Stoyanov’s performances can be found in the archives of both, the Bulgarian National Radio and the Bulgarian National Television, as well as West Virginia Public Radio, WNKU, Amazon, Udemy and Youtube. Dr. Stoyanov is actively involved in teaching violin, chamber music and string ensembles. He is the creator of “Cracking the Violin Code” video course on Udemy, where he currently teaches more than 450 students from 59 countries. He is a strong believer in music education being fun and easy, based on the idea that anything we do naturally, we do without effort. In his free time he enjoys playing with his two sons and practicing yoga. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. "The Question: Teaching Your Child the Essentials of a Classical Education" is the sequel to Leigh Bortins' 2010 book, "The Core: Teaching Your Child the Foundations of a Classical Education". In this second book on classical education, Bortins, a leading figure in the homeschooling community, explains how to foster an inquisitive spirit and challenge students with rigorous academics in the middle and early high school years. What The Core did for the grammar school stage of learning, The Question does for the dialectic stage, guiding parents through the essential questions that move students from consumers of information to analytical thinkers who engage actively with the world.

A brilliant three-part documentary that chronicles the history of Western Philosophy from ancient Greece through to today. In many ways, these ideas are the sources of our Western civilization.
